Almost 50,000 Chinese students started courses at Australian universities, colleges, and schools in 2016, which means these figures are nearly 20% up compared to 2015, which makes the Chinese student sector significantly more important than ever before to Australia’s thriving export education sector.
The Federal government data estimates this equates to nearly a 12 % increase in the number of international students from all countries but by far the biggest number was from China – a record 45,500 plus in total.
The new figures mean that international education is Australia’s third largest export industry is now worth nearly $20 billion a year and is even more dependent on a healthy Chinese economy.
